Which AI Tools Support Agent Skills? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude
2026-10-30
Short answer: as of Oct 30, 2026, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and GitHub Copilot all support agent skills, the open SKILL.md folder format Anthropic first developed. So do Cursor, Windsurf (now Devin Desktop), Grok Build and Meta's Muse Code. What differs is the plan you need and how a skill gets in: chat apps take an upload, coding agents read a folder.
Every row below comes from the vendor's own docs or help center, read on Oct 30, 2026. This page answers whether a tool supports skills. For the exact folder each coding agent reads, see our folder-path guide.

Chat apps: Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini
These are the options for people who don't use a terminal. In all three, you upload or build a skill in the app, and the assistant can pick it up on its own when a request matches.
Claude
Anthropic's help center lists skills on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Code execution and file creation must be turned on. You upload a skill as a zip and call it with / or the + button. On Team and Enterprise, owners turn skills on for the organisation and can provision skills for everyone, and members can share a skill with colleagues.
The menu is moving. Anthropic is folding the Skills, Connectors and Plugins tabs into one Plugins page, with gradual rollout from Oct 29 and general availability on Nov 9 for Free, Pro, Max and Team. Enterprise gets it on Nov 30, 2026.
Skills you upload to claude.ai don't appear in the API or Claude Code. Each surface keeps its own copy.
ChatGPT
OpenAI uses the same SKILL.md format for ChatGPT and Codex. Its help center lists Skills in ChatGPT for eligible Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu users, subject to workspace settings. You can create a skill from Skills > Create, by chat or by upload, and ChatGPT scans uploads before they go live.
Skills also arrive inside plugins, which bundle skills and apps. OpenAI's docs say plugin skills work in ChatGPT on the web, desktop and mobile. What you can install depends on your plan and workspace. You call a skill with an @ mention, or ChatGPT picks it when the description matches.
OpenAI is also retiring custom GPTs and moving their creators to plugins. Our skills vs custom GPTs guide covers what that means.
Gemini
The Gemini app has skills on the mobile app, the Mac app and gemini.google.com. You can build one in a chat, start from a template, or upload a SKILL.md file, or a folder or zip whose main folder holds one. Google's limits: you must be 18 or older with Keep Activity on, uploads are capped at 100 MB, and scripts that need internet access aren't supported. Type / (or @ with the updated shortcut) to call a skill.
Skills are replacing Gems. For personal accounts aged 18 and over, Gems become skills and turn read-only on Nov 17, 2026, and are removed on Dec 17, 2026. Google lists March 2027 for Workspace business accounts and June 2027 for education accounts.
Coding agents
Every coding agent in the table reads skills from folders and loads them the same way: names and descriptions first, the full SKILL.md when a task matches. A few details are worth knowing:
Codex: skills work in the Codex CLI, the IDE extension and the ChatGPT desktop app. Type $ or run /skills to call one.
Gemini CLI and Antigravity: Google's Gemini CLI docs say that, for unpaid-tier and Google One users, Gemini CLI was replaced by Antigravity CLI on June 18, 2026. Both support skills. Antigravity documents them for its app, IDE and CLI.
GitHub Copilot: GitHub's docs list skills in Copilot CLI, Copilot cloud agent and code review on GitHub.com, the Copilot app, and agent mode in VS Code, Visual Studio and JetBrains IDEs. They note that IDE support depends on the version you use.
Cursor: skills are found at startup and called with /. A skill with disable-model-invocation: true runs only when you call it.
Windsurf, now Devin Desktop: skills work in the Cascade agent. Devin Local shares its harness with Devin CLI, so a skill written for one works in the other.
Grok Build: xAI's docs say Grok is fully compatible with Claude Code with no configuration, and reads Claude Code's plugins and skills alongside its own .grok folder.
Muse Code: Meta's coding agent also scans Claude and Codex skill folders, and muse skills import --from claude or --from codex copies them in.
Others: Kiro, Zed, goose, OpenCode, Cline, Kilo Code and Roo Code also document skills folders. Aider has no SKILL.md support. All are covered in our folder-path guide, and agentskills.io keeps a showcase of clients that support the format.
Does one skill work everywhere?
The file format is shared, so a SKILL.md usually loads anywhere. Whether it works the same way depends on what the product lets the skill do:
Network: skills on the Claude API have no network access. On claude.ai it depends on user and admin settings, and Gemini app skills can't run scripts that need the internet. In Claude Code, a skill has the same network access as any other program on your computer.
Tools: a skill that tells the agent to run a shell command needs an agent that can run one. On claude.ai and the Claude API, skills run in a sandboxed virtual machine, not on your computer.
Sync: nothing syncs between products. Claude's docs say custom skills don't sync even between claude.ai, the API and Claude Code.
So test a skill in each product you plan to use it in. When you pick a skill from Skill Store 33, the skill page shows its source, licence and verification state, so you can see where it came from before you upload it anywhere.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT support agent skills?
Yes. OpenAI's help center lists Skills in ChatGPT for eligible Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu users. Skills bundled in plugins work in ChatGPT on the web, desktop and mobile, and Codex supports skills in the CLI, IDE extension and ChatGPT desktop app.
Does Gemini support SKILL.md skills?
Yes. The Gemini app accepts an uploaded SKILL.md file, folder or zip on the web, Mac and mobile apps. Gemini CLI and Google Antigravity also load skills from folders.
Does GitHub Copilot support agent skills?
Yes. GitHub lists agent skills in Copilot CLI, Copilot cloud agent and code review, the Copilot app, and agent mode in VS Code, Visual Studio and JetBrains IDEs. IDE support depends on the version.
Will a skill I made for Claude work in ChatGPT or Gemini?
Usually the SKILL.md format carries over, but each product runs skills differently. Network access and tools vary, so test a skill in each product before you rely on it. Skills also don't sync between products, or even between Claude's own surfaces.
Let your agent search Skill Store 33
Skill Store 33 runs a public MCP server at https://mcp.ss33.ai. Connect it once and your agent can search about 60,000 skills by task, read what each one does, and fetch the one that fits. In Claude Code, run:
claude mcp add --transport http skill-store https://mcp.ss33.ai
Without an account your agent gets 5 searches a minute. A free account gives you a key with 60 searches a minute: create one on your account page, then add it to the connection as an Authorization: Bearer <key> header.
